Dear Channahon District 17 Students, Families, and Community Members:
On behalf of the District 17 Board of Education and each of our four exceptional schools, I welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year.
A key component of our district mission is to "...emphasize real-life applications and challenge each individual to be a productive citizen and lifetime learner who deals effectively with others and the changing world." District 17 educators will achieve this mission by continuing to provide intellectually-stimulating, real-world experiences for every child. While each academic center has developed age-specific objectives, all district schools are focused on implementation of our 21st Century Learning Plan and Standards-Based Grading initiative.
21st Century Learning: District 17 students are developing the skills needed to be successful in high school, college, their careers, and beyond. These skills include critical-thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. The ability to achieve this goal will be enhanced by our district's new 1:1 program (one device for each student). Our district staff will continue to receive professional development on the use of devices to provide personalized instruction to: identify our students' interests, develop our students' strengths, and continue to challenge our students to achieve the highest levels of excellence. Real-life application in the classroom is critical to achieving this goal.
Standards-Based Grading: Additionally, we will continue our transition to grading practices based upon mastery of performance standards, which is proven to enhance learning and achievement. This year, we will continue to refine our grading practices district-wide, with first-time report card implementation occuring in grades 6-8. This will ensure our communication on student learning is clear and accurate.
Above all, Channahon District 17 educators understand that positive, meaningful relationships are essential to our students' success. These relationships will continue to be the hallmark of the District 17 experience. We also look forward to engaging with our parents and community members in 2018-2019 to continue to build upon the legacy that has been established in Will County's finest school district. We are grateful for your continued support and wish you success in the year ahead!
Sincerely,
Dr. Nicholas M. Henkle, Superintendent
