Dear Channahon 17 Families,
For this Superintendent Minute, we look ahead to America’s 250th birthday, also known as the semiquincentennial. As you know, this significant milestone represents 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In Channahon 17, we look forward to celebrating our nation’s great history, grounded in the rights of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Our nation's birthday is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to reflect on the principles that have shaped our country, which has resulted in the incredible blessings we enjoy as Americans.
Throughout the month of May, students will have creative opportunities to engage in activities that promote reflection and appreciation for our exceptional nation. These experiences will include student contests, collaborative projects, a special lunch menu, and other activities to honor the significance of this milestone. Students will be encouraged to think about what it means to be part of a nation with such a rich history, while also recognizing their role in shaping its future. As Memorial Day is in May, this is also an opportunity to honor those who served in our Armed Forces, including those who gave all for our freedom. It is important for students to not only learn about history, but to connect with it in meaningful and lasting ways.
As you visit our schools, you will notice an intentional commitment to this celebration both inside and outside our buildings. Just as we incorporate this milestone into our interiors through student opportunities, the exteriors of our buildings will also reflect this celebration with patriotic decorations and signage. Additionally, the Board of Education would like to provide all students and staff with a Channahon 17 ‘America 250’ T-shirt incorporating the ‘America 250’ Commission official logo to celebrate this semiquincentennial birthday. The logo in the middle of the banner at the top of this message will be on the t-shirts and serves as our official district logo for this celebration.
It is also worth noting that the American semiquincentennial is one of several special birthdays in the Channahon community this year. In 2026, we will also recognize the Centennial birthday of Route 66 (November 11), and the 50th birthday of N.B. Galloway School (August)! By celebrating these milestones, we connect our schools, community, State, and nation to show how they work together and provide students with a deeper understanding of our remarkable history and an appreciation for the unique opportunities available to us all. In this way, we can help students to see that they are part of something larger than themselves, with the ability to contribute positively to their community and beyond.
For those who are interested, you can also find opportunities to engage with the ‘America 250 Commission’ online at www.america250.org, including student contests, in-person events, and service opportunities. From the website: “The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was established by Congress in 2016 to plan and orchestrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Appointed by the House and Senate leadership of both parties, the nonpartisan Commission is composed of 16 private citizens, 4 U.S. Representatives and 4 Senators, as well as 12 Ex Officio members from all three branches of the federal government and its independent agencies.”
Thank you for taking a moment to read this month’s Superintendent Minute and celebrating ‘America 250’ with us! We encourage you to speak with your child about what they are learning and experiencing throughout this celebration, and to take time as a family to reflect on the blessings of being an American.
With Gratitude & Patriotism,
Dr. Nicholas Henkle, Superintendent
