Dear Parents,

It is important that you know that there have been some changes in federal and state laws that have directed all public schools to focus more on helping ALL children learn by addressing problems earlier within the general education setting.  This process, called Response to Intervention (RtI), seeks to provide assistance and intervention to students who are experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties.  This process is not considered special education services, but does allow students to receive help immediately within the general education setting.

ALL of our staff members are dedicated to providing your children with instructional strategies and interventions that will assist them with their learning.  Please know that the majority of students will be provided with instructional activities for learning at the Tier I (core curriculum) level where teachers and support staff will differentiate instruction to ensure student success.  When a student continues to exhibit areas of weakness and the Tier I level does not provide enough instruction, that student may be moved into a Tier II level which will provide additional intervention support.  Less than 5% of students may continue to need additional intervention and support beyond the Tier II level to Tier III.

In order for our teachers to analyze student learning styles and behaviors and student academic progress, we initiated a new assessment program called MAP (Measures of Academic Progress).  K-8 grade students took the MAP tests in September/October 2008 which provided all teachers with some benchmark data.  Teachers will use that data to drive their own instructional strategies as well as to monitor the growth of each individual student.  Using scientifically based assessments and instruction are two important components of the new law.  Please know that the MAP testing data will prove to be a valuable source of information that teachers will use to provide your child with a high-level learning environment.

During the month of October, our principals held RtI informational meetings for parents.  Unfortunately, very few parents attended the meetings.  We understand that all of you are very busy, so we are posting RtI information on our website for you to read at your leisure.  Please don’t hesitate to call your child’s teacher, building principal or me regarding RtI.  Additionally, if your child is experiencing some academic or behavior difficulties that seem to warrant additional interventions, you will receive notification regarding a collaborative meeting to discuss the issues from the teacher or principal.

Thank you very much for your support!

Sincerely,

Karin  Evans
