VISION 2020: A 21st Century Learning Plan

Overview: This comprehensive four-year 21st Century Learning Plan aims to prepare our students with the skills they need for college and a career in the 21st Century. It is designed to move students from ‘engaged’ in their learning to ‘invested’ in learning. The plan focuses on five areas: professional development, resources/hardware, student access/equity, personnel, 21st Century learning spaces.

Goals (Vision 2020):

  1. All graduates of Channahon District 17 will own a passion for learning and excitement for their personal future.
  2. All graduates of Channahon District 17 will be proficient Communicators, Creators, Critical Thinkers, and Collaborators (The “Four C’s”).
  3. All students will have access to a cloud-based learning device to foster personalized learning and formative assessment, allowing students to demonstrate learning through the expression of The Four Cs.
  4. Students and educators will approach teaching and learning with a “Growth Mindset” focused on inquiry and an understanding that growth occurs when constantly challenging personal limits.
  5. Educators will understand the SAMR model and work towards modification and redefinition.
  6. Students will have an opportunity to demonstrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) learning using a variety of tools and resources (ex. Maker lab: 3D printing/prototyping, green screen, robotics, kinetic machines, building, coding, autodesk design, etc.)
  7. Educators will have the tools and training needed to fully understand and implement The Four Cs to support a personalized learning experience for every student.
  8. Educators will collect and monitor growth data including: academic performance, school culture/climate, and student/teacher perceptions of teaching and learning.
  9. The Staff of Channahon School District 17 will monitor all communications within the CSD17 domain to assure student safety to include, but not limited to: visual inspection, behavior observation and industry leading resources for content surveillance.
  10. Educators will teach students to be responsible consumers of digital content through direct Digital Citizenship instruction. Educators will teach students to utilize the Internet to safely communicate, create, collaborate and think critically.
  11. Students will operate within the construct or ‘walled garden’ of the district domain (www.csd17.org). Parents will participate in sessions on internet safety and gain an understanding of the digital tools and services (filters, safety management solutions) used to protect students.
  12. The Board is committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, will have access to the internet at school and at home.

5 Areas of Focus:

  1. Professional Development: It is critical for our team to have numerous opportunities to learn and explore. We will bring in experts, attend workshops and visit school districts that have successfully implemented a 21st century program. We will have team members to help students and classrooms explore, and we will have our newly certified Google Educators (Channahon 17 teachers) available as well.
  2. Resources/Hardware: In the fall of 2016, we provided approximately three laptop carts for each grade level, which were available at request. By the fall of 2017 all students received access to a device every day (1:1). Grades k operated with an iPad, while students in grades 1-8 have access to a Chromebook. Beginning in the fall of 2017, students in grades 5-8 were permitted to take the device home each day.
  3. Personnel: The Director of 21st Century Learning oversees the 1:1 program, provides support/leadership for instruction, supports our IT needs, and even organizes student-level tech support teams. Additionally, we have added a building-level technology specialist at all of our schools. These individuals support the 1:1 program at each building by serving as a first level technician and a local innovator. These individuals also help staff achieve instructional goals, apply updates, and support 21st century learning skills.
  4. 21st Century Learning Spaces: Learning spaces will be updated through the year 2020: These spaces will be:
    • Student-centered
    • Supportive of students with special learning needs
    • Collaborative, connected learning environments
    • Bright, comfortable, and conducive to creativity and critical thinking
    • Support of a variety of technology
    • Flexible and dynamic
    • Conducive to multitasking
    • Supportive of multi-modal learning styles

5. Student Access/Equity: We will ensure our students have equitable access to learning by providing support to resources including hardware and Internet access.
